Singapore (VNA) – Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison on June 10 agreed to work towards a travel bubble, aiming to resume safe travel between the countries in the coming time.
The pledge was made during an in-person meeting between the leaders, which was held in Singapore under the comprehensive strategic partnership reached in 2015.
Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, the leaders said they are working to prepare the infrastructure and processes for such travel, adding that it starts with mutual recognition of health and vaccination certificates, possibly in a digital form.
Both prime ministers expressed their hope that Singapore students in Australia would be the first to get the opportunity to travel from this arrangement.
This is the first official visit by a foreign leader to Singapore since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under the Singapore-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the prime ministers of both countries meet annually, but their last meeting was held virtually in March last year due to the pandemic./.
